Problem

Congested road and parking space, air pollutant emissions.

Description

“Encouraging a SWITCH from car-based to active mobility using personalized information and communication technology approaches”. The aim is to improve air quality, health, and quality of life in urban areas by reducing greenhouse gas emissions helping transport policies to deliver an increase in walking and cycling for short journeys in urban areas. It is used a personalised travel planning (PTP) approach addressing frequent car users, using arguments from public health and mobility campaigning, and the use of ICT solutions. All SWITCH campaigns were applied to people in a period of life change in order to maximise the positive impact.

Results

In Vienna the following impacts was measured for one week:

  • number of car kilometres saved: 4,278 km;
  • amount of GHG-emissions saved: 855.6 kg;
  • amount of primary energy consumption saved: 342.24 litres;
  • increase in number of days with more than 30 minutes of physical activity: 977 days.

Lessons Learned

In Vienna, those were seen as the main drivers for success:

  • have a well-defined target group;
  • provide different communication channels depending on the target users to reach;
  • have strong strategic partnership supporting the contact to target persons;
  • have highly motivated staff that believes in the campaign message.
